How to Restart a Fluid Flow Analysis
Fluid flow analysis can often be computationally intensive.
While a fluid flow analysis is running, if you need to shut down your computer or use it for another task,
you can stop the analysis and later restart it at your convenience.
Additionally, you can use the restart capability to extend a completed analysis for testing the model under new conditions.
To restart a fluid flow analysis, specify options in the "Analysis Parameters" dialog as follows:
- By default, restart files are not saved during a fluid flow analysis.
If you anticipate wanting to perform a restart, it is recommended that you deactivate the "Do not save restart files" option on the "Output" tab
while setting up for the initial fluid flow analysis (see Figure 1).

- While the fluid flow analysis is running, you can click on the "Stop" button to stop the analysis before completion (see Figure 2).

- To restart the analysis, activate the "Perform restart"
option on the "Restart" tab (see Figure 3).

- Choose between two restart options (depending on the model):
- "Restart from current analysis" - Available for 3-D models only, this option allows you to continue the fluid flow analysis on the
current model from an intermediate time step.
The "From load case" field lets you specify the load case number that you want to use as the starting point for the restart analysis.
The current model files will then be updated with results from the restart analysis.
"Restart from another analysis" - Available for 2- and 3-D models, this option lets you use the results calculated from a different
analysis (with a different model name) as a starting point for a new analysis.
Specify the restart model in the "Name of model used to restart analysis" field.
The last available load case will be used.
This option is useful for testing multiple scenarios in which the first portion
of the analyses are identical, such as for studying fluid-object interactions.
Note: The node numbering must be the same in the two fluid models.
Additionally, the load curve for the restart should be continuous with the load curve from the
original analysis (i.e., the parameters in the first row of the load curve
table for the restart should pick up where the original analysis left off).
After specifying the restart options on the "Analysis Parameters" screen, you can proceed with running the
restart analysis and examining the results the same as for any other analysis.
Thus, the ability to restart a fluid flow analysis provides additional flexibility for your fluid flow simulation needs.
