How to Run a NASTRAN Solver in FEMPRO
In addition to using ALGOR's default analysis solvers, you can alternatively run a NASTRAN or other
commercial solver or a custom-written application within FEMPRO.
The capability to choose the solver provides additional flexibility for your analysis needs by enabling you to
"plug and play" solvers as needed. This allows companies also using NASTRAN and/or FEMAP to benefit from ALGOR's
value-added capabilities including an easy-to-use interface, full CAD/CAE associativity with leading
CAD solid modelers, automatic brick and tetrahedral solid meshing and complementary analysis tools such as
Mechanical Event Simulation (MES) for combined motion and stress analysis and fluid flow analysis.
To specify the solver to be used for an analysis, do as follows:
- Use the "Tools:Options..." command sequence in FEMPRO to access the "Options" screen.
- On the "Analysis" tab, the "Processor Options" section lists each ALGOR analysis type and the solver to be used.
By default, all of the analysis types will use the ALGOR solvers.
- Click on an analysis type to highlight it and then click on the down arrow in the "Processor" field to
access a pull-down menu of options (see Figure 1).

- If you have the ALG/NASTRAN core package or the
NASTRAN Support Extender installed,
"NASTRAN" will be listed as an option in the pull-down menu for the static stress with linear material models,
natural frequency (modal), critical buckling load and steady-state heat transfer analysis types.
You can click on "NASTRAN" and then specify the location of your NASTRAN solver executable (such as
Additionally, you can choose "Select Other..." and then specify the location of any executable or batch file
to be used during the analysis.
Then, when you run the analysis, the solver or application that you specified will be used. FEMPRO will look and operate
the same except that the log file from your specified solver will be displayed during the analysis. When completed,
the results will be displayed in the Superview IV Results environment for you to examine the same as for any analysis within FEMPRO.
Thus, the capability to choose the analysis solver provides additional flexibility for your analysis needs.
